In August 2013 Google introduced the new kind of results: In-Depth articles. Those articles appear below regular search results showing the featured images from the page as well as some additional information about the author and the article. That's Google's way to feature evergreen useful content. This is a great way to get some search traffic even without top rankings.

One of the requirements to be ranked in "In-depth articles" block is to have some types of Schema.org markup on the page as well as Google Authorship.
