There is something very enticing about using Slideshare. It is a well established social network and content sharing platform, and yet it hasn’t become so over-used that you can easily become lost in the crowd. There is still a rather good chance of finding a certain viral (or near viral) status there.
But just because it isn’t as crowded as the Facebooks and Twitters of the world, doesn’t mean you can immediately be noticed. It is important to distinguish yourself, creating content that catches everyone’s eye and attracts your target audience.
Even then, it is helpful to look at others who have managed to make it hot on Slideshare for tips on what you can incorporate into your own work.
1. 26 Time Management Hacks I Wish I’d Known At 20
“It’s normal to have days where you just can’t work, and days where you’ll work 12 hours straight.” This is one of a twenty-six different quotes that are genuinely helpful, and provide some perspective for those who are just starting out in the work force.
What The Presentation Can Teach Us: Using a pretty standard template that just doesn’t draw the eye, this presentation is a living proof that you don’t need fancy design skills to go hot on Slideshare. It is also pretty much all text, provided in plain black font. There is very rarely any color.
In spite of this, it holds your attention. It relies 100% on the value of the content itself, which is a risk. But in this case, it paid off.
2. CodeWeek – Explaining How to Code to 12-Year-Old Kids
Mike Miello had to give a presentation to a bunch of 12-year-olds about his career as a website developer. He came up with a super simple to explain way that broke down what coding was, how it was used, and how to do it. All in language that a young child could understand, appreciate, and actually pay attention to.
What The Presentation Can Teach Us: Slideshows are a great way to break down complicated concepts into easily managable “fact nuggets”. By incorporating pop culture references, bright colors and language that would appeal to his audience, he customized it and kept things interesting.
Ask yourself next time you make a presentation: would a 12-year-old like this?
3. Psychology and the Perfect Design
This is a guide that seeks to find the perfect balance in marketing between traditional marketing ideals, and the way people react to that marketing. It is a breakdown of psychology, and how it will impact your customers. Through knowing that information, you can better target your designs to appeal to those customers, and so create “the perfect design”.
What The Presentation Can Teach Us: You often see the advice that you shouldn’t make your slides too “loud” or “busy”. Usually, that is true. But here, they have created a rather visually crowded collection of slides, and it still looks really good.
Much of that has to do with the relevance of the images, the colors, and the quality.
4. Adaptive Images In Responsive Web Design 2014
Adaptive design is necessary in today’s world, because we have so many devices that are not just available, but common. Part of that is adaptive images, which can be seen on different sized screens without having to create multiple websites to accommodate mobile browsers.
What The Presentation Can Teach Us: There is very little text on this presentation. Instead, they have taken images and used them to show what they mean. There is also a few snippets of coding. You can see how you don’t need a lot of words to get your point across.
5. What Would Steve Do? 10 Lessons from the World’s Most Captivating Presenters
Steve Jobs was always a controversial figure in the tech world. But even though he was known as a bit of a tyrant and unpleasant man, he was also well known for being a captivating public speaker. He would personally introduce new Apple products, and they had a touch that Apple has not been able to maintain following his death.
Now he and nine others are shown here, with what they can teach us about presentations.
What The Presentation Can Teach Us: Looking at people who are captains of their industry is a great way to present a point, and grab the user’s attention. Everyone knows who Steve Jobs is, and the creator of this presentation shoved him right at the forefront to attract people. It is clickbait, and it works.
6. 10 Things Your Customers Wish You Knew About Them
There is no better way to market to your customers than knowing a lot about them. Companies will pay millions for customer research, and yet so many will miss the obvious things they wish you knew. This is a list of those things, which you can use to better market yourself and your business to your target group.
What The Presentation Can Teach Us: This one uses a lot of text, almost entirely. But they use a good font, great colors, an attractive template, and a good bit of formatting. All of this together makes it a great looking presentation, in spite of the text-heavy nature of it.
7. Trading Up The Chain: How To Make National News In 3 Easy Steps
Learn how to manipulate the media for your brand’s gain with this look into using the online news culture. It contains an excerpt from the book Trust My, I’m Lying, which gives a little more insight into marketing through media manipulation and exploiting the public’s opinion and interests.
What The Presentation Can Teach Us: Almost the entire basis of this presentation is the promise of an excerpt from Trust Me, I’m Lying. But that really worked, and it was sure to bring people in much more than the initial promise of three steps.
Do you know of any other good Slideshare presentations? What can we learn from them, to allow us to make our own presentations just as “hot”? Let us know in the comments below.
